Dharmapala Vidyalaya Profile "You yourselves should make an effort"
Dharmapala Vidyalaya was established in 1940 by Mr. P.D.S Kularatna ,The principal of Ananda college Colombo. At the outset there were classes only from standard six to senior school certificate class. While there were only two lengthy sheds covered with cadjans, there were four classes in each enclosed with planks, and the first Principal was Mr. J.E Jayasuriya. When the Japanese bombed Colombo in April the English section of Ananda College with the teachers was shifted to Dharmapala Vidyalaya. Thereafter Dharmapala Vidyalaya improved to the status of the fourth all island Buddhist College. Dharmapala Vidyalaya is a mixed school. It is situated facing Highlevel Road between Pannipitiya & Kottawa. The school is the best equipped in the country. It is blessed with a dedicated & able staff of experienced teachers.
In addition the school is repleted with modern laboratory facilities, computer laboratories, shrine rooms, special education unit, sick rooms, dental clinics, main hall, libraries, staff rooms, audio visual unit etc. It has many facilities for extra curricular activities including a large play ground with a Cricket turf, score board & a pavilion . These afford the students to participate in games such as Cricket, Football, Woo-shoo, Gymnastic, Carrom, draughts etc.
.......... It is today the foremost mixed school in Sri Lanka with a student population of over 4000. It consists of 153 staff members. The principal is Mr.R.S. Rajapaksha. Dharmapala Vidyalaya has a good academic record. It records the best achievements in national level examinations year after year. Most of its students proceed to universities of highest standing in Sri Lanka & abroad. The school motto is- "You yourselves should make an effort" The Principal A class II officer of the Sri Lanka Education administration Service. A Trained Graduate & former Deputy Director of Education administration service in Mathara & Chilaw districts. Completed 25 years as a principal. A Justice of the Peace for the whole island. President of The Executive Council of Sri Lanka Saukyadana Movement. The president of the Education Council of that Movement. A Former President of the Sri Lanka Carrom Society. ........
